Basic Tomato Sauce Recipe

Basic Tomato Sauce Recipe

Basic tomato sauce is a simple and versatile sauce that is made from crushed or pureed tomatoes and a few basic seasonings. It is a staple in many cuisines and can be used as a base for a variety of dishes, such as pasta sauces, soups, and casseroles.

To make basic tomato sauce, start by heating a small amount of oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add minced garlic and diced onions and sauté until they are soft and fragrant. Then, add crushed or pureed tomatoes and bring the mixture to a simmer. Season the sauce with salt, pepper, and any other desired seasonings, such as basil, oregano, or thyme.

Allow the sauce to simmer for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld together, then taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. If the sauce is too thick, you can thin it out with a little water or broth. Serve the sauce hot over pasta, rice, or any other desired dish, or use it as a base for a more complex recipe.

Basic tomato sauce is a simple and delicious way to add flavor and nutrition to a variety of dishes. It is easy to make and can be customized to suit your personal taste preferences. Give it a try the next time you need a flavorful sauce for your cooking!

Here's how to make one:

1 tsp vegetable oil
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
2 28-oz. cans whole tomatoes
1 6-oz. can tomato paste
2 tsp dried Italian seasoning
2 bay leaves
Salt to taste
Pepper to taste

How to prepare and cook:

In a medium, heavy-bottom saucepan, stir together the oil,
onion and garlic. Cook over low heat, stirring often, until
the onion is very soft and aromatic, about 6 to 8 minutes.
In a food processor or blender, puree the tomatoes. Add the
tomatoes and tomato paste to the onions and bring to a
simmer over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to very low
and let the sauce simmer slowly for 30 minutes, stirring
the bottom often to prevent burning.
If you are adding meatballs, do so at this time, and simmer
them in the sauce for 20 minutes, stirring often. If you
are not adding meatballs, simmer the sauce for another 20
minutes (50 minutes total). Season to taste with salt and
pepper. Remove bay leaves before serving.
